Victoria, TX – One person is dead and another is hospitalized following a traffic collision involving two vehicles on US Highway 77 in Victoria Friday morning, according to Texas DPS.

The deadly collision happened at about 6:50 a.m. on Highway 77 near Tate Road.

Reportedly, a man was driving a vehicle southbound on US-77 with two passengers – a woman and a child. The vehicle stalled in the roadway and had no lights. Authorities said the visibility in the area at the time was less than 700 feet.

According to the police, the man exited the stalled vehicle to push it across the highway.

A pickup truck, operated by an off-duty Victoria County Sheriff’s deputy, then slammed into the stalled vehicle, police said, adding that the deputy did not see the stalled vehicle.

The woman in the stalled vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The child and the man were not injured.

The deputy was hospitalized with severe injuries.

The accident remains under investigation.
