Leon County, TX. – A Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputy was injured in a multi-vehicle collision on Wednesday night near Buffalo in Leon County.

The fatal collision happened on Interstate 45 southbound at around 10:29 p.m., according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

A 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe that was being used to conduct inmate transport was traveling southbound when it was struck by a 2009 Freightliner 18-wheeler.

The front passenger of the Tahoe was ejected and landed in the northbound lanes where he was fatally hit by a 2008 Ford F-150 going north.

A 2016 Freightliner and a 2008 Freightliner traveling north struck the Tahoe that was stopped in the northbound lanes.

The passenger who was fatally struck was identified as Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputy Charles Rivette of New Caney.

The Tahoe driver, 37-year-old James Frances, of Coldspring, was airlifted to Christus Mother Francis Hospital in Tyler for treatment of serious injuries.

An inmate in the back seat was airlifted to CHI St Joseph Regional Hospital in Bryan.

The driver of one of the Freightliners was transported to Freestone Medical Center.

The Texas Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
