Leona, TX – The authorities have released the names of all the five people who died following a head-on traffic collision in Leona Saturday afternoon.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DFive PS) identified the victims as Daniela Cerda, 18, Veronica Denise Cerda, 26, Rebecca Cerda, 20, Veronica Cerda, 53, and Hermenegildo Melendez, 55, all from Houston

DPS said all five victims were in a 2023 Ford F-150 operated by Hermenegildo Melende.

The deadly crash happened at about 3:17 p.m. on May 10 on northbound I-45 at mile marker 157.

DPS said a 2016 Dodge pickup truck, operated by Toriano Fair, 43, of Dallas, was heading southbound on I-45 when, for some reason,  the pickup truck went off the roadway to the right and hit a guard rail. The truck then drove across the freeway, went across the cable barrier at the center median, and struck the Ford F-150 traveling northbound.

Both vehicles caught fire after the collision.

All five victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

Toriano Fair was hospitalized with critical injuries.

Leona, TX – At least five people were killed in a car accident on Saturday afternoon near Leona.

The fatal collision was reported around 3:17 p.m. on northbound I-45.

Two vehicles reportedly collided head-on in unclear circumstances. The vehicles caught fire after the collision.

Firefighters from the Centerville Volunteer Fire Department and Leona Volunteer Fire Department responded to the incident and pronounced five people dead at the scene.

More details about the accident were not released.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
