Patricia Ritter Killed and Karen Underwood Injured in Sabine County Multi-Vehicle Crash on US Highway 96

Sabine County, Texas – According to the Texas DPS, one person was killed and two others were injured Monday morning in a multi-vehicle crash in Sabine County.

The fatal crash happened around 8:00 a.m., February 19, on U.S. Highway 96.

DPS said a Dodge Caravan was traveling southbound behind a Ford F-150 and a Chevrolet Equinox. There was heavy smoke in the area, causing the driver of the Dodge to misjudge their speed and collide with the Ford and the Equinox.

A northbound truck tractor then struck the Ford, pushing it back into the Dodge and causing the van to strike a southbound Ford F-250.

The Dodge driver, Karen Underwood, 64, of Bronson, and one passenger were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Another passenger of the Dodge, Patricia Ritter, 80, of Pineland, was also transported to the hospital where she died of her injuries.

According to Tiffani Bradberry, administrator of Legacies Nursing and Rehabilitation, Underwood and the injured passenger were staff members of the Hemphill nursing home, and Ritter was a resident. They were traveling to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

The crash remains under investigation.

While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A.
