Heriberto Cantu Killed in Swisher County Two-Vehicle Crash on State Highway 86 at FM 2301

Swisher County, Texas (August 25, 2023) – A man was killed Wednesday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash in Swisher County, according to officials.

The fatal crash happened around 5:40 p.m., August 23, on State Highway 86 at FM 2301, about 12 miles west of Tulia.

Officials said a 2012 Ford F250 was towing a trailer on the highway while 35-year-old Heriberto Cantu, of Rio Grande, was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado northbound on FM 2301.

Cantu disregarded the stop sign and struck the Ford on the driver’s side, causing it and the trailer to leave the roadway. He was ejected and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver and a passenger of the Ford were treated for minor injuries. Two other passengers were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, pedestrian, 18-wheeler, bicycle, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign, or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates, we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation.
