James Sexton Killed in Head-On Crash on Sparta Road in Bell County; Jacob Allen Smith Arrested

James Sexton Killed in Bell County Two-Vehicle Crash on Sparta Road near Belton; Jacob Allen Smith Arrested

Bell County, Texas (July 11, 2020) – One person was killed Thursday night in a head-on collision in Bell County, one mile east of Belton, according to DPS.

The fatal crash happened around 8:40 p.m., on July 9, on Sparta Road.

DPS said James Sexton, 42, of Belton, was driving a 2008 Mercury Sedan northbound on Sparta Road while Jacob Allen Smith, 27, of Belton, was driving a 2011 Ford F-150 southbound.

Smith attempted to pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone and crashed head-on into the Mercury.

Sexton was declared dead at the scene. A 20-year-old female passenger in the Mercury was taken to Scott & White Medical Center in Temple with incapacitating injuries.

Smith fled the scene after the crash but was later arrested. He was taken to the Bell County Jail. He is facing charges including intoxication manslaughter, intoxication assault, failure to stop and render aid/seriously bodily injury and failure to stop and render aid/death.

The crash remains under investigation.
