William Gray Airlifted after Jasper County Crash on Highway 96 and Recreational Road 255

Jasper County, Texas (June 17, 2022) – William Gray, 18, of Brookeland, was among two people who were injured Thursday afternoon in a collision involving two vehicles at an intersection in North Jasper County.

The two-car wreck happened just before 3:00 a.m. Thursday, June 16, at the intersection of Highway 96 and Recreational Road 255.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a 2005 Lexus passenger car was traveling northbound on Highway 96 when it entered the crossover to turn westbound on Recreational Road 255.

The Lexus driver allegedly failed to yield to a 2005 Ford pickup truck that was heading southbound on Highway 96. The Lexus ultimately hit the pickup on its front driver’s side.

Gray, who was the driver of the pickup, was ejected from his vehicle upon the impact. He was airlifted to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont in unknown condition.

The Lexus driver, Avrye Tompkins, of Brookeland, was taken to Jasper Memorial Hospital with unspecified injuries.

Tompkins was charged with Failure to Yield Right-of-Way.

No further details regarding the crash were available.

The accident remains under investigation.
