One Killed and One Injured in Combes Two-Vehicle Crash on Interstate Highway 69; Erica Johnson Arrested

Combes, Texas (July 16, 2022) – A man was killed, and a woman was injured early Saturday morning in a DWI crash in Combes, according to the authorities.

The fatal crash happened around 12:42 a.m., on Interstate Highway 69.

Authorities said Erica Lynn Johnson, 36, of Harlingen, was driving a grey 2008 Kia Sorento southbound in the outside lane of the interstate while a man was driving a grey 2005 Chevrolet Suburban in the inside lane.

Johnson veered left to avoid colliding with another southbound vehicle, which caused her to hit the Chevrolet.

The force of the impact caused the Chevrolet to lose control and overturn multiple times.

Johnson and her male passenger fled the scene after the crash. Johnson was found hiding in a field, but the passenger was not found.

The Chevrolet driver and his female passenger were taken to Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, where the driver later died. His name has not been released.

Johnson was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter, intoxication assault, failure to stop and render aid causing death, and failure to stop and render aid causing serious bodily injury.

The crash remains under investigation.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, 18-wheeler, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates, we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation.
