Refugio County, Texas (November 26, 2023) – An 87-year-old Houston man was killed Saturday evening in a three-vehicle crash in Refugio County, according to the Texas DPS.

The fatal crash happened around 7:06 p.m., November 25, on State Highway 239.

DPS said the man was driving a 2001 Saturn eastbound when he veered into the westbound lane. A Magnum 340 Case Tractor, driven by Darren Kelso of Tivoli, was traveling westbound and was able to swerve into a ditch to avoid hitting the Saturn.

A 2023 Ford F350 pickup, driven by Ryan Ploch of Falls City, was traveling behind the tractor and attempted to avoid hitting the Saturn but the Saturn struck the side of the Ford.

The Saturn driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.

Ploch refused treatment at the scene.

Kelso was uninjured in the crash.

The DPS is investigating the crash.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, pedestrian, 18-wheeler, bicycle, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign, or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates, we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation.
