Dexter Chilton Killed in Head-On Collision on U.S. 83 in Amarillo

Dexter Chilton ID’d as Man Killed in Amarillo Crash on U.S. 83 near Shamrock

Amarillo, Texas (September 15, 2023) – The elderly man who died following a head-on collision on Thursday morning in Amarillo has been identified as Dexter Chilton, 86, of Wellington.

The deadly crash occurred at about 6:45 a.m. Thursday, September 14, on U.S. 83, four miles south of Shamrock.

Authorities said Chilton was driving a GMC Yukon northbound on U.S. 83 when he swerved into the southbound lane to pass the vehicle in front of him in a construction zone.

Chilton’s vehicle ultimately collided head-on with a northbound 18-wheeler

Chilton died at the scene.

An investigation into the crash is underway.
