19-Year-Old Jhonatan Silbano Escalate Ortiz Killed in Laredo Pedestrian Accident on Interstate 35

Laredo, Texas (March 12, 2020) – The pedestrian who was fatally hit by a vehicle earlier this month in Laredo has been identified as 19-year-old Jhonatan Silbano Escalate Ortiz from Guatemala, according to the authorities.

The accident happened around 3:20 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, on Interstate 35 near the checkpoint near mile marker 29.

According to a DPS preliminary investigation, a 2019 BMW was traveling northbound on the highway when it hit Ortiz, who was crossing the highway from the eastbound side.

Ortiz was pronounced dead at the scene. He was reportedly in the country illegally.

The DPS is investigating the crash.
