Joseph Aponte Sr. Killed in Sugar Land Two-Vehicle Crash on Highway 90A and Gillingham Lane

Sugar Land, Texas – A Sugar Land Public Works Department employee was killed Wednesday morning after his vehicle was struck by burglary suspects who were fleeing police during a chase that started in Missouri City, according to the authorities.

The fatal crash happened around 10:30 a.m., February 7, on Highway 90A at the intersection of Gillingham Lane, in front of the Public Works building.

Authorities said burglary suspects were leaving the scene of a burglary on Crestmont Loop Place in Missouri City in a black SUV about 15 minutes before the fatal crash. Responding officers initiated a traffic stop on the black SUV, but it sped off. The suspects were then pursued by the officers. The SUV entered Sugar Land on Highway 90A, ran a red light at Gillingham Lane, and struck a Toyota Camry public works truck driven by 56-year-old Joseph Aponte Sr.

Aponte was killed in the crash.

Three people were in the suspect car, two of whom had to be extricated. All suspects were taken to the hospital before going to jail.

The crash remains under investigation.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, pedestrian, 18-wheeler, bicycle, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign, or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A.
