Ofelia Proa Killed in San Juan Pedestrian Accident on Eldora Road near Cesar Chavez Road; Edith Garza Arrested

San Juan, Texas (October 5, 2021) – A woman was killed early Saturday morning in a hit-and-run accident in San Juan, according to the authorities.

The deadly accident happened just after 2:00 a.m., October 2, on Eldora Road east of Cesar Chavez Road.

Authorities said Ofelia Merlene Proa, 19, of San Juan, was walking near the roadway when she was struck by a westbound brown SUV driven by Edith Yacibe Garza, 35.

Proa was taken to a local hospital, where she later died.

Garza fled the scene after the accident. She was arrested after turning herself in and confessed that she had been drinking alcohol the night of the crash.

An investigation is underway.
