Officer Nicholas Reyna and Lt. Eric Hill Killed, Matt Dawson Critically Injured in Lubbock Crash on Interstate 27

Lubbock, Texas (January 12, 2020) – A firefighter and a police officer were killed Saturday morning while working at a crash scene in far north Lubbock, according to officials.

The crash happened on Saturday, January 11, on Interstate 27.

Authorities said at about 8:19 a.m., Lubbock Fire Rescue and Lubbock Police responded to a vehicle that had crossed the median into the northbound lanes and rolled. At about 8:36 a.m., a second vehicle hauling a trailer left the southbound lanes of I-27 and rolled.

While the emergency crews were working both accidents, a third vehicle traveling southbound on I-27 crossed over into the median and struck two firefighters and one police officer.

The vehicle continued to travel and crossed over into the northbound lanes, where it went down an embankment.

The officer, Nicholas Reyna, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The firefighters, Lt. Eric Hill, 39, and Matt Dawson, 30, were taken to University Medical Center, where Hill was pronounced dead, and Dawson was listed in very critical condition.

The police are investigating the crash.
