Pedro Gutierrez Killed in Tractor-Trailer Crash on Highway 281 in Santa Maria

Pedro Gutierrez ID’d Man Killed in Santa Maria Crash on Highway 281 and La Avenida Iglesia

Santa Maria, Texas (April 6, 2023) – The Texas Department of Public Safety has the man who died following a traffic crash on Thursday morning in Santa Maria as Pedro Omar Gutierrez, 44, of Harlingen.

The deadly crash happened at about 6:25 a.m. on Highway 281 and La Avenida Iglesia.

DPS said Gutierrez was driving a white Ford F-150 westbound on Highway 281 when a Kenworth truck tractor-trailer failed to yield the right of way at the stop sign from La Avenida Iglesia onto 281 Military Road.

The tractor-trailer collided with the Ford. Following the collision, the Ford became wedged underneath the trailer.

Gutierrez was pronounced dead at the scene while his passenger was taken to a nearby hospital in unknown condition.

The driver of the 18-wheeler did not suffer any injuries.

DPS is investigating the incident.
