Kaufman, Texas (March 16, 2021) – Two teenagers were killed Friday night in an ATV crash near Kaufman, according to the Texas DPS.

The deadly crash happened around 7:45 p.m., March 12, on FM 1388.

DPS said a Honda ATV was traveling northbound on the highway while a 1999 Chevrolet Lumina was traveling northbound.

The Lumina driver was unable to see the ATV as oncoming traffic approached, and the Lumina rear-ended the ATV. The impact ejected the ATV driver into the northbound lane while the passenger was ejected into the southbound lane and was struck by a southbound Kia Soul.

One of the teenagers was pronounced dead at the scene. The other teen was airlifted to Parkland Memorial Hospital in critical condition, where he later died.

The victims have been identified as Jacob Hines, 16, of Kaufman and Jason Makerney. Both were members of FFA.

The Lumina and the Soul drivers were uninjured in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.

ATVs are used both for recreation as well as for use in certain occupations where transportation is needed in off-road locations.

Most ATVs accidents occur because of unlawful activity. This includes operation on paved roads; operation by a driver too young for the size of the vehicle; sharing the vehicle with a passenger; riding without protective apparel; riding under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and driving without having undergone the required training.
