Tristan Sanders Killed in Houston Two-Vehicle Crash on Highway 6 near Loch Katrine Lane

Harris County, Texas (June 5, 2020) – According to the authorities, a 16-year-old boy was killed, and two other teens were injured early Friday morning in a suspected DUI crash in suburban Houston.

The fatal crash occurred just after 2:30 a.m. on Highway 6, near Loch Katrine Lane.

Deputies said a BMW sedan was heading southbound on the highway when a Hummer pulled into the roadway and the vehicles collided.

The impact caused the BMW to hit a light pole and split in half. The Hummer ended up in a ditch.

Tristan Sanders, 16, of DeSoto, who was a passenger in the back seat of the BMW, was pronounced dead at the scene. His family said Sanders was a star football player at his high school in North Texas, and he was planning to transfer to a Houston-area school.

The BMW driver, a 16-year-old, and the front-seat passenger, an 18-year-old, were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the Hummer, a 47-year-old Carlos Ayala, was not seriously injured in the crash.

Authorities said Ayala was under the influence at the time of the crash and has been charged with driving while intoxicated. Additional charges are pending a blood test.

The authorities are investigating the crash.

We pass our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Tristan Sanders.

In Texas, a driver is legally intoxicated after consuming alcohol if their blood alcohol content (BAC) is .08% or higher. A driver is also considered intoxicated if they don’t have the normal use of their mental or physical faculties by reason of the introduction of alcohol. Alcohol however is not the only intoxicant, as drivers can become intoxicated by ingesting prescription and illegal drugs such as crack, marijuana, and cocaine.

Regardless of what substance caused the driver’s reaction time to become significantly altered, intoxication by any means can cause terrible accidents and injuries.

Innocent victims harmed by drunk drivers are entitled to compensation for their injuries, including but not limited to medical expenses; lost wages; pain and suffering and mental anguish; physical impairment and disability; and most importantly, punitive damages to deter future conduct. If a death occurred because of a drunk driver, you will want a knowledgeable accident lawyer to bring a wrongful death action against the drunk driver.
