One Killed in East Austin Two-Vehicle Crash on I-35 at 38th Street; Christian Ramos Arrested

Austin, Texas (January 11, 2021) – One person was killed early Saturday morning in a DUI crash in East Austin, a local news source reported.

The fatal crash happened around 1:00 a.m., January 9, on the I-35 service road at 38th Street near the Fiesta Mart.

According to the report, Christian Ramos, 24, was driving a 2013 Mazda northbound on I-35, while a 2009 Toyota was traveling westbound on East 38½ Street.

Ramos ran a red light at the intersection and struck the Toyota at a high rate of speed.

The Toyota driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s identity has not been released.

Officers said Ramos was intoxicated at the time of the crash. He was arrested and has been charged with intoxication manslaughter. He is being held at the Travis County Jail on a $100,000 bond.

The crash remains under investigation.

In Texas, a driver is legally intoxicated after consuming alcohol if their blood alcohol content (BAC) is .08% or higher. A driver is also considered intoxicated if they don’t have the normal use of their mental or physical faculties by reason of the introduction of alcohol. Alcohol however is not the only intoxicant, as drivers can become intoxicated by ingesting prescription and illegal drugs such as crack, marijuana, and cocaine.

Regardless of what substance caused the driver’s reaction time to become significantly altered, intoxication by any means can cause terrible accidents and injuries.

Innocent victims harmed by drunk drivers are entitled to compensation for their injuries, including but not limited to medical expenses; lost wages; pain and suffering and mental anguish; physical impairment and disability; and most importantly, punitive damages to deter future conduct. If a death occurred because of a drunk driver, you will want a knowledgeable accident lawyer to bring a wrongful death action against the drunk driver.
