8 Immigrants Killed in Head-On Crash on US 277 in Val Verde County; Sebastian Tovar Arrested 

Eight Immigrants Killed in Val Verde County Two-Vehicle Crash on US 277; Sebastian Tovar Arrested

Val Verde County, Texas (March 19, 2021) – According to authorities, eight illegal immigrants were killed in a head-on collision Monday afternoon in Val Verde County.

The deadly crash occurred at about 1:26 p.m., March 15, on US 277, about 30 miles north of Del Rio.

Authorities said Sebastian Tovar, 24, of Austin, was driving a red Dodge pickup truck at a high rate of speed when DPS troopers attempted to stop him, but he sped away.

The troopers pursued Tovar, and he continued speeding until he crashed head-on with a white Ford F-150.

Tovar attempted to flee on foot after the crash but was arrested and taken into custody.

Eight illegal immigrants in the Dodge were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver and a juvenile passenger of the Ford were taken to a San Antonio hospital in stable condition. One undocumented immigrant in the Dodge was also taken to a San Antonio hospital in stable condition.

Tovar has been charged with transporting noncitizens resulting in death.

The crash remains under investigation.
