Angelina Coward and Nanette Harris Killed, Kim Powell Injured in Smith County Two-Vehicle Crash on State Highway 31

Smith County Texas, (May 8, 2022) – Two people were killed and another was injured Thursday night in a two-vehicle crash in Smith County, according to the authorities.

The fatal crash happened around 8:45 p.m., May 5, on SH 31 E, approximately twelve miles east of Tyler.

Authorities said a 2007 Nissan Van was traveling westbound on the highway when the driver pulled over onto the shoulder and attempted to make a U-turn. The van pulled out in front of a westbound 2012 Volvo XC6, resulting in a collision.

The driver of the van, Angelina H. Coward, 55, of Tyler, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger in the van, Nanette H. Harris, 79, of Tyler, was also pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Volvo, Kim Powell, 64, of Tyler, was taken to UT-Health East Texas – Tyler, in stable condition.

No other details were provided.

The crash remains under investigation.
