Brenham, Texas – A second person has died nearly two weeks after a stolen 18-wheeler crashed into a Texas DPS office earlier this month in Brenham, according to the Texas DPS.

Cheryl Turner, 63, of Brenham, died on Monday, April 22.

The fatal crash happened around 10:41 a.m., April 12, at the Brenham DPS Office on US 290.

DPS said Clenard Parker, 42, from Chappell Hill, stole a big rig from Chappell Hill. Officers spotted the stolen big rig and tried to stop Parker, but he sped and eventually crashed into the Texas DPS office in Brenham.

At one point, Parker drove the big rig out of the DPS office and had intentions of crashing through the building again, but he was taken out of the driver’s seat by law enforcement and put in handcuffs.

14 people were injured in the crash. Three of them, including Bobby Huff, 78, were airlifted to local hospitals where Huff was pronounced dead and the other two were listed in critical but stable condition. Three other people were taken to nearby hospitals by ambulance where they were treated and released. The other eight were treated and released at the scene. One of the critically injured victims, Turner, later died at the hospital.

Parker was uninjured and was taken to Washington County Jail, where he was charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon causing serious bodily injury, one count of evading arrest or detention causing serious bodily injury, and one count of unauthorized use of a vehicle. He was in custody in Washington County and was being held on a $6 million bond.

DPS said Parker drove the 18-wheeler into the Brenham office after he was denied a commercial driver’s license renewal the day before.

An investigation is underway.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, pedestrian, 18-wheeler, bicycle, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign, or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates, we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation.
