Smith County, Texas (December 9, 2020) – One person was killed, and another was injured in a two-vehicle crash Sunday night in Smith County, according to the Texas DPS.

The fatal crash happened around 8:20 p.m., December 6, at the intersection of Farm-to-Market 3226 and State Highway 64, east of New Chapel Hill.

DPS said a 2015 Ford Focus was traveling southbound on FM 3226 approaching the intersection while a 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander was traveling eastbound on SH 64.

The Ford disregarded a stop sign at the intersection, drove into the eastbound lane of SH 64 and was hit on the right side by the Mitsubishi.

The force of the impact caused both vehicles to go off the roadway and into the southbound ditch. They both came to rest facing eastbound.

The Ford driver, Deandre Jones, 23, of Palestine, was taken to UT Health Center Main where he died on Monday, December 7.

The Mitsubishi driver, Daniel Quintero Ortiz, 34, of Henderson, was taken to UT Health Center Main with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.

We pass our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Deandre Jones.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

While there are many causes of car accidents, the most common reasons for driver negligence include driver inattention; cell phone use; texting and driving; speeding; fatigue; failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign or private drive; running a red light; and driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” Attorney Joel A. Gordon said. Mr. Gordon believes that an independent investigation is important. An Attorney will help obtain the crash report, secure accident photos, interview witnesses, and create a claim.
