Deputy Jennifer Chavis Killed in Houston Two-Vehicle Crash on Sam Houston Parkway at Fondren

Houston, Texas (April 3, 2022) – A Harris County deputy constable was killed Saturday evening in a fiery two-vehicle crash in Houston, according to the deputies.

The fatal crash happened around 5:54 p.m., April 2, in the area of S. Sam Houston Parkway and Fondren.

Deputies said the deputy responded to a tip about a drunk driver, who had fled the scene of another crash, and she was on standby to catch the driver. She parked her patrol SUV on the side of the roadway. The suspected driver, in a Ford F-550 truck, rear-ended the patrol vehicle, causing it to burst into flames.

The deputy, Jennifer Chavis, was trapped in the patrol vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspected drunk driver, 36-year-old Adolfo Serrano, apparently tried to flee for a second time but was stopped by witnesses. He has been charged with intoxication manslaughter of a peace officer.

The crash remains under investigation.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, 18-wheeler, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates, we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation.
