Douglas Gonzalez Killed in Denton Two-Vehicle Crash on Interstate 35 near Wind River Lane; Jonathan Vargas Arrested

Denton, Texas – One person was killed and another was arrested on Saturday following a DWI crash in Denton, according to the police.

The fatal crash happened around 3:15 a.m., December 30, on Interstate 35 near Wind River Lane.

Police said an officer noticed a Dodge Charger driving with no headlights on that was unable to stay in a single lane on southbound I-35E. The officer tried to pull over the driver, Jonathan Vargas, 18, but he sped up to more than 100 mph.

Vargas crashed into the back of a car, pushing it off the interstate and onto a service road.

One of the passengers in the back of the car, Douglas Gonzalez, was killed in the crash.

The front passenger of the car, Alvaro Romero, and the driver, Romero’s wife, were transported to the hospital for treatment and have since been released. A GoFundMe was started to support the family and return his remains. 

Vargas sustained minor lacerations when his vehicle flipped on the interstate. He was arrested and taken into the City of Denton jail without bond. He is facing charges for intoxication manslaughter and evading arrest/detention with vehicle causing serious bodily injury or death.

The police are investigating the crash.
