Driver Dies after Train Hits Pickup Truck on Mesa Drive in Harris County

Man Killed in Harris County Train Accident on Mesa Drive near Garrett Road

Harris County, Texas (October 16, 2023) – A male driver died after his pickup truck was struck by a train on Monday morning in Harris County, according to authorities.

The deadly crash occurred just before 8:00 a.m. in the 11699 block of Mesa Drive near Garrett Road.

Authorities said about 194-foot train was heading northeast-bound on the Union Pacific tracks, approaching at the intersection of Mesa and Garrett, when a white GMC pickup truck hauling a homemade utility trailer attempted to go around the railroad crossing arms.

The train was traveling down the track and was not able to stop due to its momentum. Ultimately, the train hit the driver’s side of the pickup truck. The pickup truck’s trailer was transporting scrap metal and detached from the pickup truck upon impact.

The train then pushed the truck 2,400 feet before it came to a stop.

The driver of the pickup truck, only identified as a 69-year-old man, died at the scene. His name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

The train engineer and the conductor were uninjured.

Police temporarily closed the intersection of Mesa and Garrett during the investigation.

Further details about the crash were not immediately provided.

The crash remains under investigation.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, pedestrian, 18-wheeler, bicycle, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign, or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates, we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation.
