City of Austin Employee and Former Police Officer Ray Shillito Jr. Killed in Crash in Leander

Leander, Texas (November 15, 2023) – A city of Austin employee who is also a retired police officer was killed in a two-vehicle crash over the weekend in Leander, according to the Austin Police Department.

The deadly crash happened just before noon on Sunday, November 12, in the 8600 block of RM 2243.

According to the Leander Police Department, a Ford Excursion was traveling westbound when it developed mechanical or tire-related issues and crossed over the double yellow center line, where it collided head-on with an eastbound Chevrolet Silverado.

The impact sent the Silverado off the roadway where it overturned. The driver of the Silverado, identified as Ray Shillito Jr., 51, of Austin, died at the scene.

Authorities say Shillito was a City of Austin employee with the Code Compliance Team in the Development Services Department. Shillito was also a retired Austin Police Department officer.

The incident remains under investigation.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, pedestrian, 18-wheeler, bicycle, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign, or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates, we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation.
