Jarvis Taylor Killed in Houston Bicycle Accident on Veterans Memorial Drive near West Mount Houston Road

Houston, Texas (May 27, 2020) – Two people, including a bicyclist, were killed in a wrong-way crash Monday night in Houston, according to deputies.

The fatal crash happened around 9:00 p.m. May 25, in the 10000 block of Veterans Memorial Drive near West Mount Houston Road.

Deputies said a Harris County Deputy tried to pull over a driver for speeding, but the driver refused to stop and sped off heading southbound on Veterans Memorial.

The suspect, 31-year-old Alexis Saborit, then crossed West Mount Houston Road in his Mercedes Benz and pulled into the northbound lanes heading the wrong way. The deputy followed Saborit southbound in the northbound lanes.

Saborit then struck 63-year-old Jarvis Taylor, who was riding a bicycle in the outside lane. He continued and crashed head-on into a Buick LaCrosse driven by 57-year-old Roosevelt McClendon.

McClendon had to be extricated from his car and was airlifted to the hospital where he later died.

Taylor was also rushed to a local hospital where he later died.

Saborit showed signs of intoxication and was arrested. He is facing two counts of Felony Murder.

Saborit had a warrant out for his arrest for evading deputies outside the jail months ago.

An investigation into the crash is underway.

We pass our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Jarvis Taylor.

With the surge in popularity of alternate transportation to save on fuel costs, bicycling has emerged as a new form of mobility forced to compete with motorized traffic in dangerous situations. This has resulted in many more accidents between human-powered vehicles and powerful engine-driven machines, producing tragic injuries as well as countless fatalities.
