Edinburg, Texas – Two people were killed Tuesday morning in a four-vehicle crash in Edinburg, according to the Texas DPS.

The fatal crash happened around 9:43 a.m., April 23, at the intersection of FM 907 and Texas Road.

DPS said Amanda Marie Bender, 40, of Illinois, was driving a red Ford Escape with one other passenger eastbound on Texas Road. A red Nissan Versa was traveling southbound on FM 907 while a brown Cadillac SRX driven by a man was traveling northbound on FM 907.

Bender failed to yield at the stop sign and collided with the Nissan Versa. The Nissan then sideswiped the Cadillac, causing it to veer off to the southeast corner of the intersection and become engulfed in flames.

The Ford veered off the roadway onto the southeast corner of the intersection where it crashed into a utility pole, ejecting the passenger. The passenger, 43-year-old Jeremy John Hess of Wisconsin, hit a parked unoccupied Ford Econoline van. Hess was taken to the hospital where he later died.

The Nissan driver, 29-year-old Sergio Delgado, of Edinburg, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Bender was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The Cadillac driver was also taken to the hospital for treatment.

Bender was released from the hospital on Sunday and was arrested on two counts of criminal negligent homicide. She was arraigned and her bond was set at $2,000,000. She remained jailed in Hidalgo County.

The DPS is investigating the crash.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, pedestrian, 18-wheeler, bicycle, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign, or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates, we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation.
