Julian Lira Killed in San Antonio Two-Vehicle Crash on Interstate 35

San Antonio, Texas (January 6, 2021) – The man who was killed in a two-vehicle crash Sunday evening in San Antonio’s South Side has been identified as Julian Lira, 58, according to San Antonio police.

The fatal crash happened around 5:30 p.m., January 3, in the access road of 8500 Interstate 35 South, between Somerset Road and Palo Alto Road.

Police said Lira was driving a 1999 Mercedes-Benz C230 on the southbound access road at a high rate of speed behind a 2019 Hino 258 flatbed tow truck that was stopped because the driver was responding to a service call.

Lira tried to maneuver around the tow truck, but he ended up hitting the rear passenger’s side corner of the flatbed. The corner of the flatbed went through the windshield of the Mercedes-Benz and struck Lira in the head.

Lira was pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The tow truck was unoccupied and had its emergency lights on at the time of the crash.

Officers said sun glare might have been a factor in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

While there are many causes of car accidents, the most common reasons for driver negligence include driver inattention; cell phone use; texting and driving; speeding; fatigue; failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign or private drive; running a red light; and driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” Attorney Joel A. Gordon said. Mr. Gordon believes that an independent investigation is important. An Attorney will help obtain the crash report, secure accident photos, interview witnesses, and create a claim.
