Laura Whitfill Killed, Benjamin Whitfill and Freddie Smith Injured in Hardin County Three-Vehicle Crash on U.S Highway 96

Hardin County, Texas (August 7, 2022) – One person was killed, and three others were injured Saturday afternoon in a three-vehicle crash in Hardin County, according to the authorities.

The fatal crash happened around 12:45 p.m., August 6, on U.S Highway 96, north of Village Creek.

Authorities said a 2014 Kia Soul was traveling northbound and had slowed down for a vehicle turning right. A 2001 northbound GMC pickup moved over onto the improved shoulder, then swerved back to the left and struck the Kia. The Kia was then struck by a northbound 2006 Peterbilt truck tractor semi-trailer.

A passenger in the Kia, 36-year-old Laura Whitfill, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another passenger in the Kia, an 8-year-old, was taken to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for treatment.

The Kia driver, Benjamin Whitfill, 41, from Silsbee, was also taken to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for treatment. 

The GMC driver, Freddie Smith, 75, from Lumberton, was taken to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Beaumont for treatment.

The Peterbilt driver, Christopher Caraway, 50, from Silsbee, was uninjured in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
