Lucille Whitefield, Nicholas Espedal, and Jaime Thompson Injured in Lubbock Multi-Vehicle Crash at South Loop 289 and University Avenue

Lubbock, Texas (March 18, 2021) – Three people were injured on Tuesday in two separate crashes involving a suspect who was being pursued by authorities in Lubbock, according to police.

The crashes occurred shortly before 4:30 p.m. on March 16.

Police said an LPD officer attempted to stop a Chevrolet Lumina driven by Kaylon Kinney, 26, near Parkway Drive and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, but Kinney evaded the officer, leading to a pursuit.

As the chase approached the intersection of S. Loop 289 and University Avenue, the officers canceled the pursuit due to public safety concerns.

Kinney continued driving in the westbound access road of the 2400 block of S. Loop 289. He ran a red light at the intersection and crashed into a Ford Taurus that was traveling southbound in the 7100 block of University Avenue. The force of the impact caused the Taurus to hit a Ford F-150 that was also traveling southbound in the 7100 block of University Avenue.

Kinney fled the scene heading southbound on University Avenue.

The Taurus driver, 60-year-old Lucille Whitefield, and the Ford driver, 43-year-old Nicholas Espedal, sustained minor injuries in the crash.

Whitefield was taken to University Medical Center for treatment.

Espedal was not taken to the hospital.

The Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Texas Anti-Gang Center investigators reinitiated the pursuit, but Kinney continued evading them as he traveled westbound in the 3300 block of 98th Street.

Kinney ran a red light at the intersection of 98th Street and Indiana Avenue, and the Lumina crashed into a Chevrolet Silverado that was traveling northbound in the 9800 block of Indiana Avenue.

The impact caused the Silverado to hit a Toyota Yaris that was also traveling northbound in the 9800 block of Indiana Avenue. The Yaris spun and struck the Lumina.

The Yaris driver, 27-year-old Jaime Thompson, sustained minor injuries in the crash.

The Silverado driver, 59-year-old Dwain Mitchell, was uninjured in the crash.

Kinney was arrested and taken into custody. He was taken to University Medical Center with minor injuries.

An investigation is underway.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

While there are many causes of car accidents, the most common reasons of driver negligence include driver inattention; cell phone use; texting and driving; speeding; fatigue; failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign or private drive; running a red light; and driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” Attorney Joel A. Gordon said. Mr. Gordon believes that an independent investigation is important. An Attorney will help obtain the crash report, secure accident photos, interview witnesses, and create a claim.
