Man Fixing Trailer Hit, Killed by Drunk Driver on I-10 East near Channelview

Man Killed in Channelview Pedestrian Accident on East Freeway (Interstate 10)

Channelview, Texas (February 28, 2020) – A man was hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver Thursday night near Channelview, according to the deputies.

The crash was reported around 10:00 p.m. on February 27, in the 16300 block of the East Freeway.

According to investigators, a white Dodge pickup truck, hauling a homemade trailer with auto parts, was heading eastbound when the driver noticed his trailer was not secure and parked the truck along the inside center divider of the freeway. The driver and his male passenger exited the vehicle to fix the trailer.

That’s when an eastbound black Dodge truck veered out of a main lane and struck the trailer and the passenger.

Deputies said the trailer was separated from the truck.

The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the white Dodge was uninjured in the crash.

A man and two women who were in the black Dodge were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the black Dodge was suspected of driving while intoxicated and could face intoxication manslaughter charges. He cooperated with the investigators.

The crash remains under investigation.

We pass our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

In Texas, a driver is legally intoxicated after consuming alcohol if their blood alcohol content (BAC) is .08% or higher. A driver is also considered intoxicated if they don’t have the normal use of their mental or physical faculties by reason of the introduction of alcohol. Alcohol, however, is not the only intoxicant, as drivers can become intoxicated by ingesting prescription and illegal drugs such as crack, marijuana, and cocaine.

Regardless of what substance caused the driver’s reaction time to become significantly altered, intoxication by any means can cause terrible accidents and injuries.

Innocent victims harmed by drunk drivers are entitled to compensation for their injuries, including but not limited to medical expenses; lost wages; pain and suffering and mental anguish; physical impairment and disability; and most importantly, punitive damages to deter future conduct. If a death occurred because of a drunk driver, you will want a knowledgeable accident lawyer to bring a wrongful death action against the drunk driver.
