Marrie Johnstone Killed and Julie Mercer Injured in New Braunfels Two-Vehicle Crash on RM 32 near Devils Backbone

New Braunfels, Texas (March 27, 2022) – A woman was killed, and another was injured Friday evening in a two-vehicle crash, just outside of New Braunfels, according to the authorities.

The fatal crash happened around 6:12 p.m., March 25, in the 4800 block of Ranch-to-Market Road 32, near Devils Backbone.

Authorities said Marrie Johnstone, 54, of Fischer, was driving a 2009 Ford Mustang southeast on RM 32 while Julie Elizabeth Mercer, 32, of San Antonio, was driving a 2013 Lincoln MKX northwest.

The Ford veered off the roadway at a curve, and in an attempt to regain control, the driver overcorrected, spun back onto the roadway into the northwest lane of traffic, and struck the Lincoln.

Johnstone was ejected from her vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her seatbelt appeared to have broken.

Mercer was extricated and was airlifted to Seton-Hays Hospital in Kyle.

No other details were available.

The crash remains under investigation.
