Galveston, Texas (October 25, 2019) – A Jamaica Beach Police Department officer was critically injured early Thursday morning in a traffic accident in Galveston, according to the Galveston Police Department.

The accident happened around 12:30 a.m. October 24, in the 16000 block of Farm to Market Road 3005.

Galveston police said the Lake Jackson Police Department requested their assistance in apprehending a man in a white truck who had been leading them on a high-speed chase for some time.

John Perkins, 41, refused to stop and threatened to kill himself and a passenger.

Galveston police officers and the Jamaica Beach officer were deployed to FM 3005 in order to set up a roadblock and keep Perkins’ vehicle on the correct side of the road.

Perkins hit a Galveston police car and then hit the Jamaica Beach police car.

The impact lifted the car off of the ground and threw it into another vehicle that was not involved in the chase.

The officer was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Perkins was taken into custody and was charged with aggravated assault on a public servant. His bond was set at $250,000. He also faces additional charges by the Lake Jackson Police Department.

The crash remains under investigation.
