Sarfaraz Karowadia and Altaf Kasowadia Killed in Jefferson County Crane Accident on Interstate 10

Jefferson County, Texas (April 23, 2021) – Two people were killed Thursday afternoon in an accident involving a crane in Jefferson County, according to the Texas DPS.

The fatal crash happened around 4:30 p.m., April 22, on Interstate 10 near Smith Road.

DPS said construction crews in the area were working on the I-10 widening project and were operating a heavy crane when the crane experienced some type of malfunction and struck a westbound 2013 Toyota pickup truck.

The Toyota driver, 37-year-old Sarfaraz Karowadia, and his passenger, 42-year-old Altaf Kasowadia, both from Friendswood, were pronounced dead at the scene. 

The accident closed the interstate for several hours. The interstate has since been reopened.

The crash remains under investigation.
