Sean Nelson Killed in DUI Accident on East Freeway in Channelview

Sean Nelson Killed in Channelview Pedestrian Accident on Interstate 10 (East Freeway)

Channelview, Texas (February 29, 2020) – A man was killed in a suspected DUI accident Thursday night in Channelview, according to a local news source.

The accident occurred around 10:00 p.m. on February 27, in the 16300 block of the East Freeway (Interstate 10).

Deputies said a white Dodge pickup truck, hauling a homemade trailer with auto parts, was heading eastbound when the driver noticed his trailer wasn’t secure and parked the truck along the inside center divider of the freeway. The driver and his male passenger, Sean Nelson, got out of the vehicle to fix the trailer.

That’s when an eastbound black Dodge truck, driven by 24-year-old David Carillo, veered out of a main lane and struck the trailer and Nelson.

Carillo’s Dodge overturned to its side following the impact.

The crash detached the pickup from the trailer, and the pickup drove into a bushy median that separates the main lanes and the frontage road.

Nelson was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man and two women in Carillo’s truck were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Carillo was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

We pass our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Sean Nelson.

In Texas, a driver is legally intoxicated after consuming alcohol if their blood alcohol content (BAC) is .08% or higher. A driver is also considered intoxicated if they don’t have the normal use of their mental or physical faculties by reason of the introduction of alcohol. Alcohol, however, is not the only intoxicant, as drivers can become intoxicated by ingesting prescription and illegal drugs such as crack, marijuana, and cocaine.

Regardless of what substance caused the driver’s reaction time to become significantly altered, intoxication by any means can cause terrible accidents and injuries.

Innocent victims harmed by drunk drivers are entitled to compensation for their injuries, including but not limited to medical expenses; lost wages; pain and suffering and mental anguish; physical impairment and disability; and most importantly, punitive damages to deter future conduct. If a death occurred because of a drunk driver, you will want a knowledgeable accident lawyer to bring a wrongful death action against the drunk driver.
