Sgt. John Hamm Hit, Injured by DUI Driver During Jeep Weekend Event at Crystal Beach in Galveston County

Sergeant John Hamm Airlifted after Galveston County DUI Crash at Crystal Beach

Galveston County, Texas (May 23, 2022) – A Galveston County sheriff’s deputy was injured after being struck by a drunken driver during the Jeep Weekend event in Galveston County early Sunday morning, authorities said.

The crash happened at about 1:30 a.m. on May 22 at Crystal Beach.

A vehicle driven by Darius Danzell Gilbert, 22, reportedly hit the deputy Sgt. John Hamm. Hamm nearly went through the windshield after the crash.

Hamm sustained two broken legs, a broken arm and head injuries and was airlifted to UTMB in Galveston, where he is expected to undergo surgery.

Gilbert was booked into jail on suspicion of DUI. His bail was set at $100,000.

No additional information was available.

The crash remains under investigation.
