Terry Williams and Joey Mcclelland Killed in Newton County Two-Vehicle Crash on Highway 87

Newton County, Texas (July 24, 2022) – Two people were killed, and another was injured Friday night in a head-on collision in north Newton County, according to the Texas DPS.

The fatal crash happened around 8:30 p.m., July 22, on Highway 87, about three miles north of Burkeville.

DPS said a 2001 Chevrolet pickup truck was traveling southbound while a 1997 Ford pickup truck was traveling northbound. The Chevrolet crossed over the centerline and collided head-on with the Ford.

The Chevrolet driver, Joey Mcclelland, 33, of Newton, was taken to Jasper Memorial Hospital, where they later died. The Ford driver, Terry Williams, of Hemphill, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the Ford, David Tilley, 40, also of Hemphill, was airlifted to Kingwood Medical Center for treatment.

The DPS is investigating the crash.
