One Killed in SE Austin Two-Vehicle Crash on US 183; Benito Mondragon Mercado Arrested

Austin, Texas (January 11, 2023) – One person was killed on New Year’s Day in a DWI crash in Southeast Austin, according to the police.

The fatal crash happened around 8:55 p.m., January 1, in the 3000 block of S US 183.

Police said 33-year-old Benito Mondragon Mercado was driving a sedan when he collided with an SUV.

A passenger in the sedan was taken to the hospital, where they later died. Their identity has not been released.

Mondragon Mercado was arrested for intoxication manslaughter.

No other details were provided.

The police are investigating the crash.
