2 Injured in Crash Involving Unmarked Police Car on Lomaland at Gateway East in East El Paso

Two Injured in East El Paso Two-Vehicle Crash on Lomaland and Gateway East

El Paso, Texas (January 1, 2020) – Two people were injured on New Year’s Eve in a traffic collision involving an unmarked police car in east El Paso, according to a local news source.

The crash happened on Tuesday, December 31, at Lomaland and Gateway East.

Authorities said Rene Diaz, 50, was driving a 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 northbound in the 1300 block of Lomaland approaching Gateway East.

Diaz ran a stop sign at the intersection and crashed into the unmarked police vehicle, which was heading eastbound in the 8200 block of Gateway East.

The driver of the police vehicle, a 23-year veteran, and their passenger, an 8-year-old veteran, were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
