2 Killed in Hit-and-Run Motorcycle Crash on Avenue Q in Lubbock; Benjamin Ray Mitchell Arrested

Two Killed in Lubbock Motorcycle Crash at 47th Street and Avenue Q; Benjamin Ray Mitchell Arrested

Lubbock, Texas (September 30, 2020) – The driver who was involved in a hit-and-run crash that left two people dead on September 15 in Lubbock has been arrested in Michigan, according to police.

29-year-old Benjamin Ray Mitchell was arrested on September 22.

The fatal crash happened around 10:13 p.m. in the 4600 block of Avenue Q near 47th Street.

Police said Mitchell was driving a Buick Lacrosse southbound behind a motorcycle ridden by 40-year-old Anthony Childers.

Mitchell then crashed into the motorcycle and fled the scene.

Childers and his passenger, 31-year-old Barbara Matthews of Hobbs, New Mexico, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Buick was found abandoned shortly after the crash.

Mitchell was arrested in St. Clair County, Michigan, on September 22. He was wanted by the U.S. Marshals for a parole violation with an original charge of sexual assault of a child.

A warrant for Mitchell has been obtained for two counts of failure to stop and render aid, causing death in connection to the crash.

The Major Crash Investigation Unit is investigating the crash.
