6-Year-Old Brownsville Boy Killed in Cameron County Pedestrian Accident at South Padre Island; Hector Martinez Jr. Arrested

Cameron County, Texas (July 13, 2022) – A 6-year-old boy was killed after he was struck Sunday evening by a vehicle in Cameron County, according to authorities.

The fatal crash occurred at around 5:22 p.m. Sunday, July 10 at South Padre Island, approximately a half-mile north of Cameron County Beach Access No. 5.

Authorities said the 6-year-old boy from Brownsville was playing near the shoreline when a Ford Expedition backed up and hit him.

The boy was flown to a hospital in Harlingen, where he was declared dead. His name has not been disclosed.

The driver of the Expedition, identified as Hector Martinez Jr., 53, of Brownsville, was arrested and booked into Cameron County jail Sunday on charges including intoxication manslaughter and a second-degree felony.

Martinez-Junior has been bonded out of jail.

Further details regarding the crash were not immediately provided.

An investigation is underway.
