David Alaquinez Killed in San Antonio Car Crash on Loop 410 at Roosevelt Road

San Antonio, Texas (December 27, 2020) – Two people were killed early Thursday morning in a wrong-way crash in San Antonio’s South Side, according to police.

The deadly crash happened around 2:45 a.m., December 24, in the eastbound main lanes of Loop 410 at Roosevelt Road.

Police said Alejandro Montoya Rodriguez, 26, was driving a silver 2014 Mazda westbound in the eastbound lanes when a silver compact car swerved to miss it and rear-ended an 18-wheeler. The compact car became wedged under the 18-wheeler. The driver, David Alaquinez, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Rodriguez continued driving westbound in the eastbound lanes where he crashed head-on into a pickup truck at about 2:48 a.m. The pickup driver, Jay Simon Mejia, 33, was killed in the crash.

Mejia worked as a nurse at the University Hospital.

Rodriguez and his passenger exited the vehicle before it caught fire. They were taken to University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Rodriguez was booked by proxy with bail totaling $200,000. He is facing two counts of intoxication manslaughter.

The crash closed the eastbound lanes of Loop 410, and traffic was diverted onto the access road.

The crash remains under investigation.

In Texas, a driver is legally intoxicated after consuming alcohol if their blood alcohol content (BAC) is .08% or higher. A driver is also considered intoxicated if they don’t have the normal use of their mental or physical faculties by reason of the introduction of alcohol. Alcohol however is not the only intoxicant, as drivers can become intoxicated by ingesting prescription and illegal drugs such as crack, marijuana, and cocaine.

Regardless of what substance caused the driver’s reaction time to become significantly altered, intoxication by any means can cause terrible accidents and injuries.

Innocent victims harmed by drunk drivers are entitled to compensation for their injuries, including but not limited to medical expenses; lost wages; pain and suffering and mental anguish; physical impairment and disability; and most importantly, punitive damages to deter future conduct. If a death occurred because of a drunk driver, you will want a knowledgeable accident lawyer to bring a wrongful death action against the drunk driver.
