Alejandro Polanco Killed in North Lubbock County Bicycle Crash on Interstate 27

Lubbock County, Texas (July 18, 2021) – According to the Texas DPS, a bicyclist was killed early Friday morning in a crash in North Lubbock County.

The deadly accident happened around 5:40 a.m., July 16, on Interstate 27, about half a mile south of Abernathy.

DPS said Alejandro Polanco, 46, was riding a Schwinn tricycle pedal-cycle northbound in the southbound lane when he was struck by a southbound 2002 Volkswagen Beetle that was attempting to pass a truck that was in the outside lane of travel.

Polanco was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Beetle diver, 54-year-old Anthony Shane Davis of Plainview, was uninjured in the crash.

The troopers are investigating the crash.

With the surge in popularity of alternate transportation to save on fuel costs, bicycling has emerged as a new form of mobility forced to compete with motorized traffic in dangerous situations. This has resulted in many more accidents between human-powered vehicles and powerful engine-driven machines, producing tragic injuries as well as countless fatalities.
