39-Year-Old Amber Sahagun Killed in Odessa Three-Vehicle Crash on Interstate 20; Ranjit Singh Arrested

Odessa, Texas (April 3, 2020) According to the Odessa Police Department, a truck driver has been arrested in connection with the crash that left one person dead and another injured last month in Odessa.

The fatal crash happened just after 4:00 p.m. March 19, on Interstate 20 at Grant.

Police said a Dodge truck was stopped in the westbound lanes of the highway due to construction, and a Jaguar was traveling behind it.

The driver of an 18-wheeler, Ranjit Singh, 42, failed to control his speed and rear-ended the Jaguar, pushing it into the back of the Dodge. Singh had been driving for over 16 hours without proper rest, which is a violation of the Federal Hours of Service Regulation.

Amber Sahagun, 39, of Decatur, Texas, who was a passenger in Jaguar, was declared dead at the scene.

The driver of the Jaguar was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A warrant was issued for Singh’s arrest. He was arrested in California by the U.S. Marshals Service and has been charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The crash remains under investigation.

We pass our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Amber Sahagun.

Who May Make a Wrongful Death Claim in Texas?

A wrongful death claim for a family member may be brought by spouses, children or parents. The State of Texas also allows the estate of the deceased to bring a survival action to recover for past medical expenses and conscious pain and suffering, as well as other non-economic damages which the deceased may have suffered before death. Texas does not permit brothers, sisters, cousins, or grandparents to assert any claims for the death of a family member.

Wrongful death claims require an attorney who understands the complexity of the damages caused by a significant loss. The lawyer representing the client has the responsibility to hire the necessary experts to help prove the case.
