Barry Smith Killed in 2-Vehicle Crash on Highway 96 in Jasper County

Barry Smith ID’d as Man Killed in Jasper County Crash on Highway 96 near County Road 773

Jasper County, Texas (October 17, 2023) – The Texas Department of Public Safety has identified the man who died following a Saturday traffic accident in the south end of Jasper County as 44-year-old Barry Smith.

The deadly crash happened on Saturday, October 14, on Highway 96 near County Road 773 on the south side of Buna.

DPS said Smith was driving a Ford F-150 pickup truck southbound when he veered off the highway and slammed into a pole. Smith’s vehicle then drifted into the northbound lane and was struck by a GMC Sierra pickup truck.

Smith was transported to St Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the GMC, 68-year-old Robert Booker of Kirbyville, did not suffer any injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
