Cain Rangel-Ramirez, Olin Hood Killed in Oldham County Three-Vehicle Crash on Interstate 40

Oldham County, Texas (February 28, 2023) – Two people were killed, and two others were injured Monday morning in a three-vehicle crash in Oldham County, according to the Texas DPS.

The fatal crash happened around 7:40 a.m., February 27, on Interstate 40, west of Vega.

DPS said a GMC Sierra pickup truck was facing eastbound on the interstate and was stopped in the outside lane for an unknown reason.

A 2019 Peterbilt truck tractor semi-trailer was traveling eastbound in the outside lane, while a Freightliner truck tractor semi-trailer was traveling westbound in the inside lane.

The 2019 Peterbilt then rear-ended the GMC. The GMC then drove through the center median cable barrier and into the inside westbound lane, where it struck the Freightliner truck tractor semi-trailer.

The cab of the GMC was separated from the frame and came to rest in the inside westbound lane.

The Freightliner overturned, became fully engulfed in flames, and it burned completely.

The GMC driver, Olin Hood, 82, of Ojai, California, and the 2019 Peterbilt driver, Cain Rangel-Ramirez, 37, of Bakersfield, California, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Freightliner, Frantz Maxi, 31, of Covington, Georgia, and a passenger, Edwin Theodora, 28, of Lehigh Acres, Florida, were taken to Amarillo Northwest Texas Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, pedestrian, 18-wheeler, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign, or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates, we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation.
