Derrick Steele Killed in Bicycle Crash on US 69 in Cherokee County

Derrick Steele Killed in Cherokee County Bicycle Accident on US Highway 69 

Cherokee County, Texas (July 25, 2023) – A bicyclist was killed Saturday morning in a crash in Cherokee County, according to the troopers.

The deadly accident happened around 5:50 a.m., July 22, on US Highway 69, 4 miles North of Jacksonville.

Troopers said Melanie Renee Reyes, 36, of Jacksonville, was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe northbound when she struck Derrick Wayne Steele, 49, of Jacksonville, who was riding a bicycle northbound on the highway.

Steele was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Reyes was uninjured in the crash. She was uninjured in the crash and was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The weather condition was clear, and the road conditions were dry.

The troopers are investigating the crash.
