Dexter Chilton Killed in Shamrock Two-Vehicle Crash on U.S. 83

Shamrock, Texas (September 16, 2023) – A man was killed Thursday morning in a two-vehicle crash about four miles south of Shamrock, according to the Texas DPS.

The fatal crash happened around 6:45 a.m., September 15, on U.S. 83.

DPS said 86-year-old Dexter Chilton, of Wellington, was driving a 2003 GMC Yukon northbound on the highway in a construction zone while a 2008 Peterbilt Truck Tractor towing a semi-trailer was traveling southbound.

Chilton moved into the southbound lane to pass northbound traffic in a no-passing zone and entered into the path of the semi-truck.

The driver of the truck tractor veered to the right to prevent a crash, but the Yukon’s front left struck the front of the truck tractor.

Chilton was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the truck tractor was treated and released at the scene for minor injuries.

TxDPS is investigating the crash.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, pedestrian, 18-wheeler, bicycle, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign, or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates, we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation.
