Moore County, Texas (October 27, 2022) – A woman was killed, and a man was seriously injured Wednesday morning in a head-on collision in Moore County, according to the Texas DPS.

The fatal crash occurred at about 10:05 a.m., October 26, on Farm-to-Market Road 119, about five miles southwest of Sunray.

DPS said Gretchen Houser, 48, of Sunray, was driving a 2011 Toyota Venza northbound on the highway while Zachary Hooks, 36, of Texhoma, Oklahoma, was driving a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado southbound.

For unknown reasons, the Toyota drifted into the southbound lane. Hooks swerved into the northbound lane to avoid a crash, but the Toyota traveled back into the northbound lane and collided head-on with the Chevrolet.

Houser was pronounced dead at the scene. She was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Hooks was airlifted to an Amarillo hospital with serious injuries. He was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, 18-wheeler, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign, or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates, we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation.
